Due to the high degree of public interest in the recent request for the Library Board of Trustees to reconsider the name of the Regional Library system, JMRL has collected relevant information about the topic on this page.
It is important to note that the Library Board does not have the ability to change the name of JMRL without a revision of the regional agreement between Participating Localities, Albemarle, Charlottesville, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. This presentation outlines the evolution of the library's name since its inception in 1921.
Library Trustees are appointed by elected officials to set library policies, adopt official budget recommendations, and develop long range plans for library development. Residents are welcome to share ideas with Library Trustees and to attend monthly Library Board meetings.
The Board of Trustees of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library usually meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 3:00 pm.
See the FY23 Schedule for exact dates and location.
Previous Board Meetings and associated information can be found on the Board Meeting Handouts page.
The JMRL Library Name Working Group held a virtual meeting on Tuesday October 25th at 7:00 PM with representatives from UVa, Charlottesville's Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials, and Public Spaces, and Albemarle County Public Schools.
The Working Group discussed a series of questions designed to understand the process that these three organizations have used for self reflection, with the understanding that JMRL's Board does not have the ability to change the name of the Library.
